Accusing the DAP leaders of familial connections with historical figures like Chin Peng and Lee Kuan Yew, Mastura ignited a legal firestorm.

In their defence, Mastura pointed to purported facts sourced from a book published by the Barisan Nasional communications department. She claimed these allegations were part of the coalition’s 15th general election campaign material. Alleging blood ties between Kit Siang, Guan Eng, and Lee, along with Kok's relation to Betty Chew, Guan Eng's wife, Mastura attempted to justify her statements.

However, the DAP trio swiftly countered, highlighting contradictions within Mastura's defence. They cited remarks from BN deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan and former Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil, who debunked the same campaign material in a news report dated November 11, 2023.
