KIULU: A pilot project for digital tourism data collection has been launched in Kiulu to enhance the recording of tourist arrivals in rural Sabah.

Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the initiative aims to improve data collection, analysis, and utilisation for rural and community-based tourism.

The project, a collaboration between the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) and Kiulu Tourism Association, uses an application developed by Datablu to assist operators in managing activities more professionally.

Joniston highlighted that from January to November 2024, 85 community-based tourism operators from 18 districts submitted data, recording 269,154 visitors and generating over RM6.5 million in revenue.

He said the success of this project in Kiulu could lead to its expansion across Sabah and Malaysia, ensuring better tourism planning and promotion.
