KIULU: Kiulu is building on its reputation as a hub for river sports and eco-adventures with the 5M Bombon Tagal River Festival, said Assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.
He said the event, which features traditional river activities, celebrates the district’s natural beauty while strengthening community unity and environmental awareness.
The festival highlights five native activities—netting, body rafting with bamboo poles, tubing, traditional angling, and bamboo stilt walking—as part of efforts to preserve local heritage and promote rural tourism.
Joniston, who is also Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister, said Kiulu’s offerings align with Sabah’s “Explore Sabah” focus for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, alongside other sporting events such as the Borneo Ultra Trail Marathon and the Kiulu Adventure Challenge.
He added that community development remains central to Kiulu’s eco-tourism growth, citing a three-year collaboration with Nanhua University of Taiwan that trains villagers in pineapple cultivation, agro-tourism, and product processing.
