Khairy Jamaluddin has stated that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will not retire even if the party loses in six state elections.
"Zahid will not resign," said the former Umno Youth chief, implying that the party would ignore the message from voters if many of its candidates lost in the polls. “Umno will continue to exist as before. Umno will act as if nothing has happened,” said KJ, according to Free Malaysia Today.
"Even if Umno suffers a (big) defeat, Zahid will act as if nothing has occurred," Khairy said after voting at SMA Hj Mohd Yatim in Kota, Negeri Sembilan.
According to Malaysia Kini, Now that it is over a week after the state elections, even though the result remains 3-3 (Pakatan Harapan-BN vs Perikatan Nasional), Harapan-BN has fared poorly in this six-state elections.
Consider the number of seats obtained by the alliance in the six states so far (a total of 232). Of course, we have a first-past-the-post voting method, but Harapan-BN won 93 seats while PN won 139.
Umno/BN performed badly in the latest state elections. So far, it has only won 17 seats out of 230 in six states. BN received the most seats in the Harapan-BN coalition, with 108. The Malays nearly completely rejected the party in the 2015 general election and the trend has not yet subsided. So does this means KJ’s predictions regarding Zahid Hamidi will come true?
Instead of stepping down, Zahid Hamidi promised to restore Umno's fortunes and accept "full responsibility" for the party's bad result in the six state elections.
"What I can promise is that, with the aid of the party's leadership, I will do more to restore public trust,” he told The Star.
