KOTA KINABALU: Fourteen inmates from Kota Kinabalu Prison were released on Thursday under the Licensed Prisoner Release Programme (PBSL) in conjunction with the Merdeka celebrations.
The prison’s Deputy Director, Prison Superintendent Yusli Yusof, said four of those freed were from the women’s prison, with some having less than two weeks left to serve while the longest sentence remaining was just under three months.
He explained that PBSL is open to inmates serving terms of three years or less, including minor drug-related cases, and requires them to work under approved employers for the remainder of their sentence.
Chief Inspector Saifuladli Awang, who heads the parole unit, said 516 inmates have been released nationwide this year under the programme, with jobs assigned in line with their skills to help reintegration.
Yusli added that the initiative has shown positive results in reducing repeat offences and stressed that support from families and communities remains key to ensuring former inmates can rebuild their lives.
