In the midst of the Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) by-election fervor, a recent incident involving a Pas leader's remarks has stirred controversy and potentially jeopardized support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. The incident revolves around the questioning of the academic background of the Unity Government's by-election candidate from PH-DAP, Pang Sock Tao, which analysts believe could sway voter sentiment against the opposition.
This was done as retaliation following the PN by-election candidate, Khairul Azhari’s academic qualifications came under scrutiny after a TikTok user doubted and questioned his academic credentials which sparked the controversy.
Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, Pas information chief, ignited the controversy further by directly raising doubts about Pang's educational credentials, particularly her background in vernacular schools. This move, deemed by analysts as a personal attack rather than a focus on pertinent issues, may have repercussions not only among the Chinese electorate but also with Malay voters in KKB.

Associate Professor Dr. Awang Azman Awang Pawi of Universiti Malaya opined that Fadhli's statement could alienate Chinese voters from supporting the opposition, emphasizing the need for political discourse to center on substantive matters rather than personal attacks. Meanwhile, political analyst Dr. Ainul Adzellie Hasnul highlighted the backfiring effect of Fadhli's remarks on Pas and PN, particularly in light of Pang's exemplary academic achievements.

The incident underscored the importance of constructive campaigning focused on addressing constituents' concerns and outlining tangible plans for community development. Instead of engaging in mudslinging, candidates should prioritize sharing their visions and strategies to enhance the well-being of KKB residents.
Fadhli's subsequent apology did little to quell the controversy, as it reignited discussions about the role of vernacular schools in Malaysia's education system. While rumors swirled about Pas's potential exclusion from PN's campaign efforts, Selangor PN chairman Datuk Seri Azmin Ali dismissed such speculations, reaffirming the coalition's commitment to engaging voters and advancing its agenda.
Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man sought to downplay the incident, urging the public to focus on official party communications rather than succumb to online provocations. He reiterated Pas's support for the Bersatu candidate and emphasized the collective stake in securing victory for PN in KKB.
As the by-election date draws nearer, the incident serves as a cautionary tale against the pitfalls of divisive rhetoric and personal attacks in political discourse. In the pursuit of electoral success, candidates must demonstrate integrity, empathy, and a genuine commitment to serving the interests of their constituents. Only through constructive engagement can meaningful progress be achieved for the benefit of all.
