Just yesterday, it was reported that ‘flood tourism’ became a real thing in Kelantan, as crowds gathered and stalls opened on a flooded Kelantan street, turning the atmosphere festive.
But, this isn’t exactly a good thing.
The Ministry of Health (KKM) took to its X page to urge people to avoid treating the floods like a ‘water park’ as floodwater can carry diseases, including one that comes from rat excrement.
They wrote, “Flood season is back! The public is advised to be aware of the current instructions from the authorities.”
“Always take personal health care measures as shared in series (by the authorities) to prevent diseases that often occur during the flood season.”
And what are these diseases, you ask?
Well, there’s leptospirosis, which comes from rat urine, and melioidosis, which is a bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated soil, air and of course, water.
“Avoid playing with flood water to avoid the risk of leptospirosis (rat urine bacteria infection) and melioidosis, which can be transmitted through contaminated flood water,”
“Stay safe, take preventive measures before it’s too late,” they added.
