Kota Kinabalu: The Local Government and Housing Ministry will collaborate with the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) and the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (Muis) to identify public suraus across the state requiring upgrading.
Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said the initiative follows observations during his visits to over 20 districts, where prayer facilities in public places such as markets and shopping malls were found to be in need of improvement.
He said his Ministry, alongside Jheains and Muis, will engage with mall and supermarket operators to jointly enhance prayer spaces to ensure worshipper comfort and accessibility.
Speaking after officiating the upgraded Anjung Senja surau here on Friday, Mohd Arifin commended Sedafiat Sdn Bhd and the City Hall (DBKK) for their joint corporate social responsibility effort in upgrading the waterfront facility.
He also encouraged other corporate entities to emulate the initiative, noting that a separate surau at the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) building has recently been upgraded into a mosque with approval from the State Mufti to accommodate Friday prayers.
