KL Declaration to be unveiled at 46th ASEAN summit

THE Kuala Lumpur Declaration is slated for launch during the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, which will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 26 to 27 May.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced that the document’s contents would be made available to the media following its official unveiling.

“The Foreign Ministry, together with the ASEAN 2025 Secretariat, will ensure that the media receive documents contained in the declaration,” he said during his weekly press conference.

Fahmi, who also serves as spokesperson for the MADANI Government, had earlier conducted an inspection of the 46th ASEAN Summit International Media Centre (IMC) at KLCC.

According to the ASEAN 2025 website, the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 is scheduled to be signed on 26 May. The declaration is expected to outline the bloc’s long-term aspirations and collaborative goals for the coming two decades.

Malaysia, serving as Chair of ASEAN 2025, will host the summit alongside two key inter-regional dialogues: the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.

“These high-level meetings mark an important platform for expanded regional and inter-regional cooperation,” said Fahmi.

Commenting on Kuala Lumpur’s selection as summit host, he noted, “The last time Malaysia hosted the ASEAN Summit was 10 years ago. So, this is an opportunity for us to show how much progress we have achieved.”

He added that this year’s summit differs significantly due to Malaysia’s success, through the Foreign Ministry, in securing the participation of all six GCC nations.

In a separate remark, Fahmi addressed the ongoing Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA’25), currently underway at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) from 20 to 24 May.

He said the Cabinet is reviewing plans to expand the exhibition space for future editions.
