In a startling twist to the regional safety narrative, Kuala Lumpur has now been named one of the top three most dangerous cities in Southeast Asia.

This was revealed in a recent crime index for 2025, compiled by Numbeo, which paints a concerning picture of safety and security across Asia’s bustling urban centres.

The report posted by @seasia.stats on Instagram highlights the persistent challenges posed by high criminal activity in several major cities.

Top 3 in Southeast Asia

Kuala Lumpur, our capital, has been ranked sixth on the list with a crime index of 59.0.

This positioning places the city behind urban areas such as Damascus, which tops the list with a staggering index of 68.9, and major Philippine cities Manila (64.5) and Quezon City (63.9).

While KL ranks sixth among Asia’s most dangerous cities overall, the picture changes when the focus narrows to Southeast Asia, with only Manila, Quezon City, and Kuala Lumpur representing the region in this high-stakes lineup.

The relatively high crime index of Kuala Lumpur has surprised many netizens, serving as a wake-up call regarding security in the Malaysian capital.

“Are you kidding?”

The comment section of the post reveals a vibrant mix of emotions: shock, humour, and scepticism.

While many are rattled by ranking, others defend the city with playful banter, arguing that a single statistic can’t tell the whole story.

Amid the jokes, a recurring call for improved safety measures stands out, urging local authorities to take proactive steps to enhance urban security.

Meanwhile, some challenged the credibility of the index. They debated the methodology behind Numbeo’s figures, with some arguing that the data might be exaggerated or not entirely reflective of the on-the-ground reality in KL.

A Broader Regional Concern

Alongside Kuala Lumpur, other cities like Dhaka (Bangladesh), Delhi (India), and Ghaziabad (India) have also recorded crime indices exceeding 58.

Additionally, cities such as Tehran (Iran), Karachi (Pakistan), and Baghdad (Iraq) appear on the list.

This highlights that urban centres across Asia, regardless of their association with conflict, are grappling with significant law and order challenges.
