In line with the MADANI concept launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on 19th January 2023, which is an effort to drive and restore Malaysia’s dignity and glory in the global arena. MADANI is the Malay acronym for SCRIPT, which stands for sustainability, care and compassion, respect, innovation, prosperity, and trust.

One of the many attraction of the day was from the uniformity and continuous blaring of sounds from the bag pipes by the SJAPB, which was founded in 2005 by ex-students of St. John’s Institution Cadet Band. This group was fundamentally created as a place for friends to share and learn about the Highland/Scottish music on the Bagpipes and Drums.

The lion dance also attracted a large score of tourists, as the lion dancers gave a lively performance, gamboling about to the beat of pounding drums and crashing cymbals. Interestingly, the lion dance requires two very fit persons, one holds the paper-mâché head of the lion, and another acts as its hind legs; both are joined by a colorful cloth body. The lion head weighs around 2 kg and costs around RM3,320, which is decorated with a colorful bow on its horn, silk pom-poms and bells. Every gesture from the lion whether from the lifting of a leg to the fluttering of an eyelid is choreographed to a particular beat in the music and is performed by a troupe of musicians on cymbals, gongs and drums.

The pair of dragons dance also attracted and fascinated the public and is usually performed during Chinese New Year. The belief is the Chinese dragons bring good luck to the people, and the longer the dragon is in the dance, the more luck it will bring to the communities. The dragons are believed to possess qualities that include great power, dignity, fertility, wisdom and auspiciousness. The graceful movements in the performance traditionally symbolize the power and dignity of the dragon.
