Kundasang: Local vegetable traders in Pekan Kundasang received a patriotic boost Tuesday when the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Convoy (KMJG) Sabah 2025 visited their market as part of the “One House One Flag” community cluster programme.
The initiative saw the Jalur Gemilang and Sabah state flag distributed to vendors in the area, the first time such a programme has been conducted in the popular tourist destination.
Persatuan Pemborong dan Peruncit Sayur Bumiputera Kundasang Chairperson Matiana Taliban expressed gratitude for the flag distribution, saying it has enhanced the festive atmosphere at their market stalls.
“This is the first time such a program has been held in Kundasang, and the joy at our stalls is clearly evident with the flying of the Malaysian flag,” said Matiana.
Matiana noted that the programme not only enlivens the National Month and Sabah Day celebrations but also strengthens patriotic spirit among the local community.
The association hopes similar initiatives will continue annually due to their positive community impact.
Matiana said Kundasang’s status as a tourist destination is further highlighted when visitors see the national flags flying at the vegetable stalls, with some tourists praising the vendors’ efforts to honour National Day celebrations.
The programme serves as an important platform to bring communities closer to the Malaysia Madani spirit through the display of the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of unity and national identity.
Meanwhile, Ranau Member of Parliament Datuk Jonathan Yasin said patriotic spirit needs to be cultivated from the school level so it becomes ingrained in the souls of Malaysians.
He said that although Sabah is not hosting this year’s Malaysia Day celebrations, it should not prevent the people from celebrating at the local level.
“The presence of the KMJG 2025 convoy team aims to further ignite patriotic spirit within us and encourage the public to fly the Jalur Gemilang as a sign of love for the country,” said Jonathan who was represented by Ranau Parliamentary Liaison Officer Benedict Gunda.
Jonathan expressed the Ranau community’s gratitude for the convoy team’s commitment in ensuring Sabah residents, particularly Ranau citizens, participate in demonstrating their love for the country through flag displays.
In line with the “One House One Jalur Gemilang” initiative, he said the spirit of flag flying should be maintained not only during the national month but throughout the year as a symbol of Malaysian pride.
“Be responsible Malaysian citizens and to the younger generation always respect the Jalur Gemilang and be proud to be part of Malaysia,” he said.
The event featured various activities including coconut bowling competitions, traditional Linopot food preparation demonstrations, eco-print exhibitions and demonstrations, government agency displays and small and medium industry entrepreneur sales booths.
Present were Ranau Assistant District Officer Farihah Jamian, Ranau Native Court District Chief Dominic Ganie, Sabah Information Director Jainisah Mohd Noor who is also Sabah KMJG Convoy Chief and Ranau District Information Officer Kenney Thomas.
