A man armed with a knife was fatally shot by police in the western German city of Krefeld after allegedly attacking officers who responded to a family dispute, authorities said early on Sunday.

A woman suffered minor injuries during an altercation involving the 41-year-old man and family members in the Uerdingen district before police arrived, according to a police statement.

The man attacked two responding officers with a knife when they reached the scene on Saturday evening, police said. One officer then opened fire, critically injuring the suspect.

The 41-year-old was taken to hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

Neither of the two officers was injured during the incident.
