Cross-cultural collaboration explores the uncertainty between friendship and romance

South Korean singer-songwriter Imzoo has teamed up with Australian artiste Will Hyde for her first international collaboration, Waiting for U, a bilingual R&B single that blends heartfelt storytelling with a cross-cultural exchange.

The track was released on global streaming platforms last month before recently becoming available on Korean music services. It marks a new milestone for Imzoo as she expands her music beyond Korea through an international collaboration.

A duet told from two perspectives

Rather than following the traditional duet formula, Waiting for U unfolds as a conversation between two people navigating the uncertain space between friendship and romance.

The song captures the familiar experience of waiting for a message, checking a phone repeatedly and wondering whether the other person feels the same way.

Built around a warm R&B groove and understated production, the track sees both artistes trade verses from opposite perspectives. While Imzoo sings as someone waiting for a response, Hyde’s verses reveal he has been experiencing the same uncertainty all along, allowing the story to gradually unfold through both voices.

Music becomes a language exchange

One of the collaboration’s standout features is its bilingual approach.

Imzoo performs parts of the song in English, while Hyde sings several lines in Korean. During the recording process, the pair worked closely together to help each other perfect their pronunciation, making the language exchange an integral part of the creative process.

The lyrics also include a lighthearted reference to jeyuk-bokkeum (stir-fry spicy pork), one of Hyde’s favourite Korean dishes, offering listeners a small glimpse into the friendship that developed while creating the song.

Reflecting on the experience, Imzoo said helping Hyde with his Korean pronunciation became one of her favourite memories from the project.

“I helped Hyde practice the Korean lyrics during recording, and it was fun hearing his pronunciation become more natural over time. Learning each other’s languages while making music together became one of my favourite parts of this collaboration.”

A new chapter for Imzoo

Waiting for U follows Imzoo’s previous single Forgive Me, continuing her focus on honest and relatable emotions while introducing a new creative direction through international collaboration.

By bringing together artistes from Korea and Australia, the single celebrates more than just romance. It also highlights the connections that can be formed through music, language and shared experiences.

With Waiting for U, imzoo takes an important step towards reaching a broader global audience while staying true to the emotional storytelling that defines her music.
