Kota Kinabalu: The Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu feels Sabah’s White Kinabalu Birdwing should be adopted as State Butterfly, being a rare and vulnerable species.
The destruction of the Kinabalu Birdwing butterfly habitat is occurring on an alarming scale. The primary threats are deforestation caused by the pressure from the increasing human population and climate change.
“It is hoped that the iconic insect (Scientific subspecies name: Troides andromache) can be adopted as the State’s biodiversity emblem, and recognised as Sabah’s State Butterfly icon,” Rotarian Stephen Sutton said, telling his audience that he was contacted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on concerns about the vulnerable fate of these butterflies
