
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Cancer Registry recorded 8,818 new cases in the State from 2012 to 2016.
“The age-standardised incidence rates were 94.8 for males and 111.1 for females over 100,000 population,” said Api-Api Assemblywoman Datuk Seri Christina Liew during a talk on Lifestyle and Cancer Prevention, here.
AdvertisementThe talk was organised by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Kota Kinabalu Branch at Citadines Waterfront Kota Kinabalu and attended by some 100 people.
Liew, who is also Kota Kinabalu PKR Branch Chief said Kota Kinabalu reported the highest number of cancer cases, followed by Sandakan and Tawau.
“For males, the most common cancer reported was colorectal cancer followed by lung and prostate cancer, while in females, breast, cervical and colorectal cancers were most commonly reported.
“Most of the cancer cases were detected at a late stage with up to 66.6 per cent of the patients (male and female) presenting at Stage III and IV,” she said.

Based on the statistics released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, there were estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and 10 million new cancer deaths in 2020,” she said, adding that the incidence is on a rising trend.
She said in Malaysia as a whole, the just released National Cancer Registry Report for 2017 to 2021 indicated an increase in the incidence rate compared to the 2012 50 2016 period.
Advertisement (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});It was pointed out that the 10 most common cancers affecting men were colorectal, lung, prostate, liver, lymphoma, nasopharynx, leukaemia, non-melanoma skin cancer, stomach and pancreas.
In the case of women, the 10 most common cancers were breast, colorectal, lung, endometrial (womb cancer), ovary, cervical cancer, lymphoma, thyroid, leukaemia and liver.
