Malaysia Cleanup Day 2026 targets 200,000 participants and 28 tonnes of recyclables, with nationwide clean-up activities planned on Sept 25
PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has set two key objectives for the 2026 Malaysia Cleanup Day (HCM): to attract the participation of 200,000 people and collect 28 tonnes of recyclable materials.
Its Minister, Nga Kor Ming, said the two targets were set to create two new marks in the Malaysia Book of Records through the HCM, which will be held simultaneously nationwide on Sept 25.
To broaden participation this year, he said the ministry would collaborate with the Ministry of Education to recognise the participation of students from 10,000 schools in HCM as one of the activities under the Physical Activity, Sports and Co-Curricular Assessment (PAJSK).
“The involvement of the younger generation is one of the important approaches in efforts to instill a culture of cleanliness as a shared practice and responsibility,” he told a press conference on the pre-launch of the event here today.
Nga said this year’s HCM had also received the support of 21 strategic partners, comprising companies from the cleaning sector, industry associations, government-linked companies, multinational corporations, retail companies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
He said the programme had become increasingly important given the continued rise in the country’s solid waste generation, with Malaysia recording 14.5 million tonnes of waste in 2024, a figure expected to increase to 17 million tonnes by 2035.
“A clean environment not only reflects the country’s image and level of development, but is also closely linked to public health, the people’s well-being and environmental sustainability,” he added.
The 2026 National HCM celebration is scheduled to be held at Pasar Taman Seri Gombak in Batu Caves on Sept 26.
Various activities have been lined up, including public area clean-up campaigns, recycling activities, exhibitions and community awareness programmes.
Members of the public are urged to join in and make HCM 2026 a success by carrying out clean-up activities at their homes, shops, offices or surrounding areas.
