Kpop Demon Hunters ending explained: What is Rumi’s real identity?

Initially in the Netflix original, Rumi appears to be a regular member of the demon-hunting K-pop group Huntrix. However, towards the end of the film, it is revealed that she is a half-demon.

Born to a demon father and a human mother who once hunted demons herself, Rumi has spent her life concealing the glowing marks etched into her skin. Now a member of Huntrix, the newest iteration of a warrior lineage known as the Hunters, she fights demons using the group’s unique blend of music and performance, an art form turned weapon. This helps channel the Honmoon, a mystical shield that safeguards the world from demonic incursion. The Honmoon’s power is fueled by the unity and voices of the Huntrix trio — Rumi, Mira and Zoey.

As the group prepares for the live performance of their single “Golden”, Rumi’s demonic markings intensify and spread to her neck. This coincides with her sudden inability to sing high notes. Her voice also starts to break, hinting that her demonic heritage is affecting her vocal ability. When she confides in her mentor Celine, she learns that if Huntrix can turn the Honmoon golden, it will erase all traces of demonic presence on Earth, including her patterns.

Does the Honmoon turn golden during the Idol Awards?

No, it doesn’t.

Just as their voices begin to rise in unison and the Honmoon starts to shimmer with power, Huntrix is sabotaged by the Saja Boys — a rival K-pop idol group formed by the demon Jinu. While they appear to be just another flashy boy band, Jinu’s true aim is to lure in the fans and slowly drain their souls, channelling that energy back to Gwi-Ma.

During Huntrix’s performance at the Idol Awards, Jinu reveals Rumi’s true identity to the world. Soon, the crowd recoils, her teammates are stunned, and the Honmoon’s golden transformation is interrupted. Overcome with shame and heartbreak, Rumi abandons the stage and flees to talk to Celine.

Later, Celine urges Rumi to conceal her markings and rejoin the group under the pretence that it was all a trick orchestrated by Gwi-Ma. But Rumi refuses. No longer willing to live a lie, she declares that she will not hide her demonic side as it is a part of who she truly is.

Yes, they are.

In his final move, Gwi-ma sets out to drain the souls of the human world in one sweeping blow. He commands Jinu and the K-pop group Saja Boys to perform a live show at Namsan Tower, drawing a massive crowd of fans. Mid-performance, Gwi-ma emerges, casting a powerful spell to hypnotise the audience and prepare their souls for consumption.

But just before he can strike, Rumi arrives. Her voice pierces through the dark trance, awakening her fellow Huntrix members, Mira and Zoey. The trio reunites on stage, singing in harmony and reigniting the power of the Honmoon. Gwi-ma retaliates, mocking their efforts and claiming their voices alone cannot defeat him. However, Jinu — torn between his loyalty to Gwi-ma and his secret love for Rumi — sacrifices himself, buying her the time she needs. Fuelled by grief and conviction, Rumi sings with renewed strength. The others join in, and their voices converge in perfect synchrony. The Honmoon turns golden at last, unleashing a surge of light that vanquishes Gwi-ma and seals the demon realm for good.
