KPRJ aims to turn Johor into e-sports development hub

ISKANDAR PUTERI – Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor Sdn Bhd (KPRJ), through its subsidiary Sports Johor Sdn Bhd, intends to make Johor an e-sports pioneer and turn the state into a development centre for the sports in the country.

KPRJ corporate sector head Khairudin Hasan said e-sports had the potential of expanding and it was well received in the state, as seen by the 7,500 entries received for the Johor E-Sports Festival 2022 (JEF22) in March.

“We see that e-sports did not have a clear pioneer in the past, (so) we have taken the initiative, only our approach is a slow and steady one, depending on our capability and support given.

“With over 7,000 entrants, that’s as much as what we get from other sports. We do see Johor having lots of facilities, and with its large population and being close to Singapore, there is really a lot of potential.

“Also, with such sporting infrastructure, that’s one of the reasons the state could win the Malaysia Games (Sukma) and Johor does have plans to be a sports powerhouse, so this is one of our humble contributions to the sports industry,” he said during the JEF22 Grand Final media conference here today.

The JEF22 Grand Final will be held at EduCity Sports Complex here from October 21 to 23, after qualifying rounds were held on March 22, May 22 and July 22, and will feature 32 teams from each qualifying round competing in three games: FIFA22, Mobile Legends Bang Bang (MLBB) and Player Unknown Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile.

The winners of the FIFA22 finals will win RM10,000 while the MLBB and PUBG Mobile champions will take back RM8,000 respectively. – Bernama, October 17, 2022
