The women and family ministry aims to train 50,000 skilled elderly caregivers by 2030 to address Malaysia’s ageing nation status

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) aims to train 50,000 skilled caregivers for the elderly by 2030 as a strategic step to address the ageing nation status.

Its deputy minister, Lim Hui Ying, said that the target was outlined under the National Senior Citizens Action Plan (PTWEN) 2026-2030 to support the development of a comprehensive elderly care ecosystem, particularly long-term care.

She said that this effort to care for the elderly is a holistic challenge that requires a whole-of-nation approach across various ministries and active involvement from the private sector.

“One of the initiatives launched by KPWKM regarding long-term care is the development of the Malaysia Care Strategic Framework and Action Plan 2026-2030.

“…this strategic framework also includes initiatives and private sector involvement that can be implemented through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) efforts aimed at enhancing the provision of daily care services at home and competitive and accessible private care centres,” she said during Question Time in the Dewan Negara today.

Lim said this while answering a question from Senator Dr. Wan Martina Wan Yusoff regarding the government’s plans and preparations to finance the increasing costs of elderly care, considering that Malaysia is moving towards an ageing nation.
