Russian President Vladimir Putin has met with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder for a one-on-one meeting, the Kremlin said on Friday.
“Yes, they met. It was a good conversation,” Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, told the Interfax news agency.
He was unable to provide any details regarding the content of the meeting or possible prospects for negotiations between Russia and the European Union.
The meeting reportedly took place at the Kremlin in Moscow.
Putin recently named Schröder as a possible mediator for talks between the EU and Russia. The 82-year-old is a friend of the Russian President and, following his time in government, worked as a lobbyist for Russian energy companies.
The mediation proposal was rejected by in Germany and other EU states.
Relations between the EU and Russia have been severely strained by Russia’s war against neighbouring Ukraine, which has been ongoing since 2022.
