Kristin Cavallari is teaching her kids about finances by having them fly coach when she flies first class.
The Laguna Beach alum — who shares three children with her ex-husband Jay Cutler — shared on a recent appearance on the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast that she teaches her children that her money is not their money.
“My kids don't just get whatever they want,” Cavallari, 39, said on the episode released July 7. “And if they want something, they have to work for it.”
She continued: “I try to be very hyper-aware of that because they are growing up in a very fortunate situation, and I want them to know this is my money. This is not your money. Something as small as they fly coach. I'm flying in first class. That was important to me when they became old enough.”
The reality star joked that her sons Camden, 13, and Jaxon, 12, and daughter Saylor, 10, are old enough to not fight when they are alone on a plane, which she said makes it easier for her to say, “Bye guys, have fun back there.”
“It's good for them,” she added. “And I think it's little things like that, as a parent, that ultimately make a big difference in the long run.”
Cavallari, founder of the jewelry and skincare company Uncommon James, said about her parenting style: “I have chosen to be the best mom that I can be and be a good business owner. I would love to sit here and tell you Uncommon James is a $100 million company, and it's not. But I am the best mom, and my kids would tell you that also.”
The beauty mogul explained that her tough love parenting approach has encouraged her children to earn money by starting their own side hustles.
“One of my boys was washing people's windows. And the other one was washing people's garbage cans,” she said on the podcast. “Because if they want something, they got to go work for it. And they got to make it happen.”
Her admission comes after several celebrities have sparked controversy with the same decision to sit separately from their children on flights in recent years, including Jessica Simpson, Gordon Ramsay, Matthew Stafford and Robbie Williams.
Ramsay told The Sun in 2021 that the move keeps his children “grounded,” saying, “When they ask if they can pop up to us for some nice food, we say, ‘No you f***ing can’t’, so now they take their own picnics on board, and they’re absolutely fine in economy. I mean, what 14-year-old needs to sit in a reclining chair?”
