Kuala Lumpur's top police official, Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid, has acknowledged a troubling trend within the force: the leakage of sensitive information on social media platforms. This revelation, he emphasized, not only sullies the reputation of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) but also poses a significant threat to the nation's security and stability.
In a stern statement, Majid underscored the imperative of upholding confidentiality, as mandated by the Official Secrets Act 1972 (Act 88), which strictly prohibits the unauthorized disclosure of classified information. He cautioned against the reckless dissemination of such data in the digital age, where the rapid advancements in technology facilitate its widespread circulation, often without due consideration for the potential legal consequences.
Addressing a gathering at the Kuala Lumpur Contingent Police Headquarters, Majid highlighted the recent achievements and challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in the capital. Notably, the Kuala Lumpur Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department reported a seizure of various illicit drugs valued at RM1.7 million in January, slightly lower than the figures recorded in the corresponding period of 2023. Despite this decrease in the total value of confiscated contraband, the department recorded a notable increase in the number of arrests, with 2,352 individuals apprehended compared to 1,333 in January 2023.
Furthermore, the Kuala Lumpur Commercial Crime Investigation Department conducted 366 operations and raids, resulting in the arrest of 421 individuals in the same month. Majid also disclosed ongoing efforts to combat call center scams, with four investigation papers opened and charges filed against two suspects, while inquiries into two additional cases remain underway.
In light of these developments, Majid urged greater vigilance and adherence to protocols among police personnel to safeguard sensitive information and maintain public trust. He reiterated the commitment of the PDRM to uphold the rule of law and preserve national security, calling for collective efforts to address emerging threats and uphold the integrity of law enforcement operations in Kuala Lumpur and beyond.
