KUDAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) conducted an urgent medical evacuation here on Wednesday, transporting a critically ill three-day-old baby from Banggi Island to Kudat Hospital.

MMEA Kudat Maritime Zone Director Maritime Commander Maurice Grenville Abeyeratne said they activated the mission after receiving a distress call from the Karakit Health Clinic on Banggi Island at 3pm.

“The victim, identified as Mohd Adwa Faiq Salleh, was suffering from high fever and was at risk of contracting a meningeal infection, as well as convulsions, if not treated immediately,” he said.

Abeyeratne said the baby, who was accompanied by his mother and three medical officials, was taken on MMEA’s Halilintar 02 boat to the mainland, arriving at the Marina Jetty in Kudat at 5pm.
