On 26 Sept 2022, it was reported that University Putra Malaysia offered a scholarship to national women’s hockey player Kirandeep Kaur after she spoke up about her struggles in obtaining a scholarship despite her 9As for SPM and a CGPA of 3.88 in her matriculation while training as an athlete.
When I read this today, I rejoice with Ms Kirandeep. Congrats to Kirandeep! Congrats to UPM! This news sent a spark of hope to my heart. I am sure many financially poor students who did well in their exams are also encouraged by this news. Many others may be encouraged to study hard to achieve their dreams as they now know that there is a chance of getting a scholarship for them, regardless of their race. Fellow Malaysians, we are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. For the past few decades, we have seen over beloved nation owing being poisoned by persistent expressions of racial discrimination. We see inequality in our government machinery, education system and business opportunities due to one’s race, descent, ethnic origin or religion. Despite the many different inclusive slogans by the government aimed at embracing the spirit of inclusivity, unity and respect among Malaysians, the success is almost nil. The minority in Malaysia is frustrated and disillusioned. It is a real irony that those who have contributed the most in taxes to the building of this nation are denied their rights to good, affordable education here where they are born. Those who can afford to send their children overseas are only a drop in the ocean.
That is why I rejoice today. It is a step in the right direction by University Putra Malaysia to plug the brain drain from Malaysia. I hope all other institutions of education will also take this same move to take in students and even offer them necessary scholarships based on merits instead of race. Malaysia is blessed with great talents and we need to nurture them. Then the children of this land will be blessings to our nation. They will make Malaysia great again.
God bless Malaysia!
