KUNAK: Victims of the recent Kg Kunak Tiga fire which razed six houses may apply for the Rumah Mesra Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) or the Hardcore Poor Housing Programme (PPRT) through the Ministry of Rural Development (KPLB).

Kunak Tiga Village Chief, Panglima Abdul Lahil Sarail, said he would try to get support from local leaders from the Community Development Leaders Unit (UPPM) and the Kunak District Office.

“Kunak Tiga is a village that has been gazetted…of course the victims involved need good and comfortable homes,” he said here.

Abdul Lahil said the area involved in the early Wednesday morning fire was on landed area not above water.

He said nine families of fire victims are still housed in the Temporary Relief Centre (PPS) at the village hall involving more than 40 individuals comprising babies, youths, adults and elderly.

“Some of the victims are secondary and primary school students. They lost valuables and school equipment.

“I hope that the district’s leadership will be able to help,” he said, adding that he would try to help push for the allocation of SMJ Houses to the victims.

Kunak District Officer Awang Mohd Yusof, Community Development Leader (PPM) Hussin Mohd Rais (PGRS) and Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (PHRS) Vice President Datuk Supardianshah Suyuti also inspected the fire site and the temporary settlement in the village hall on Wednesday.

Abdul Lahil thanked all parties whether government agencies, NGOs, political leaders and individuals who extended various forms of assistance to the victims.

“I urge all the residents involved to be patient with this ordeal and thank all benefactors and aid donors on behalf of the village committee, we appreciate all forms of help,” he said.

Abdul Lahil said Kg Kunak Tiga has been the official name of the village since its existence in the 1950s during the British era.

“The village profile can be checked in the records at the Kunak Native Court,” he said.
