Kuwait's air defences intercepted missiles and drones overnight, the country's military said early on Wednesday, in the latest reported attack on the Gulf state amid lingering tensions between Iran and the United States.
The armed forces said on X that air defence systems had been activated and that explosions heard across parts of the country were linked to the interception of incoming projectiles. It did not identify the source of the missiles and drones or say what their intended targets were.
Missile alerts sirens also sounded in Bahrain overnight, the country's Interior Ministry said on X. "Citizens and residents are urged to remain calm and head to the nearest safe place," the ministry said.
Since US and Israeli strikes on Iran began in late February, Iran has repeatedly launched missiles and drones towards Kuwait and other Gulf states that host US military facilities. Several US bases are located across the Gulf, only a few hundred kilometres from Iran.
Although a ceasefire has officially been in place since early April, sporadic attacks have continued. Tehran has described the strikes as retaliation for US military actions.
Earlier, the US military said it had disabled an empty oil tanker in the Gulf with a missile strike. The vessel had attempted to enter an Iranian port on Tuesday and was hit near Kharg Island, a key hub for Iran's oil exports, US Central Command said on X.
The United States imposed a blockade on shipping entering and leaving Iranian ports on April 13 as part of its campaign to increase pressure on Tehran.
