A Russian aerial attack on Kyiv leaves over 5,600 buildings without heating in -14C temperatures, with a woman wounded and widespread damage reported.
KYIV: A Russian aerial attack overnight has left thousands of residential buildings in the Ukrainian capital without heating in sub-zero temperatures.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Tuesday that 5,635 residential buildings were without heating following the assault. He added that a large part of the city was also without running water.
A woman was wounded and hospitalised in the attack. Klitschko confirmed that several buildings, including a primary school, were damaged.
The strikes come roughly 10 days after Moscow’s worst attack on Kyiv’s energy grid since the start of its invasion four years ago. That January 9 attack targeted energy facilities, depriving half the city of heating and leaving many without electricity for days.
In the latest assault, Russia fired long-range combat drones before launching cruise missiles towards the city and its region. Multiple explosions were heard in the city centre, according to AFP journalists.
“Municipal and energy services are working to restore heating, water, and electricity in city homes,” Klitschko added.
Russia has been systematically pounding Ukraine’s energy system since the start of its full-scale invasion. Kyiv says this is an attempt to sap morale and break Ukrainian resistance.
