LABUAN: A 43-year-old police corporal attached to the Bebuloh police station here was discharged and acquitted by the Sessions Court of a corruption charge involving RM500, without his defence being called.
Judge Nur Ashikin Mokhtar freed Corporal Sahbudin Burhanuddin after ruling at the end of the prosecution stage that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against him.
Sahbudin was accused of receiving the RM500 bribe from a 34-year-old man as an inducement not to take action against the man for breaching his conditions as a Person Under Supervision (OKP) at Simpang Telaga 9, Kampung Bukit Kalam, at 9am on July 6, 2018.
He had been charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable under Section 24(2) of the same Act, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine upon conviction.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Prosecuting Officer Joe Randy called 12 witnesses during the trial that began on April 14, while counsels Mohamad Syazwan Shah and Nigel Neong Kaning represented Sahbudin.
