LABUAN: The Botanical Garden, which is the preferred area of many joggers and exercise buffs due to its serene and verdant ambience, had slipped into an unenviable state and become dangerous for the elderly and children.
According to some regular joggers, the bituminous running tracks and walkways with interlocking tiles were damaged, uneven and left neglected while the outdoor gym mat torn with some equipment needing repairs.
Furthermore, the plants were not pruned with dead branches and leaves while lamp post fitting missing and a collapsed lamp post, adding to the story of lack of maintenance.
Jogger, Julius Elias, said: “A friend of my mine had officially written and complained about the conditions at the Botanical Garden to the Labuan Corporation and the risks they posed to visitors. But no action was taken except that it would look into the matter”.

It was also surprising for some that the gardens which had been closed at the end of 2021 for several months for repairs and maintenance works would need another round of attention.
The Botanical Garden is a site of historical importance as former Colonial Secretary Sir Hugh Low is credited with most of the trees planted. His early efforts set the foundation for the area to be evolved into a beautiful garden.
The Governor’s official residence was also located there and the locals called it “Bumbung 12” for its 12 pointed roofs. Apart from these there are also several historical memorials including the old British Naval cemetery.
