LABUAN: A retailer in rural Labuan was issued a compound after being found using a weighing instrument with an expired verification period during an inspection by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN).
KPDN Labuan Director Junaidah Arbain said the inspection found the trader using a double-faced spring balance with a capacity of 20kg for commercial transactions despite its verification having expired.
She said the trader was issued a compound for an offence under the Weights and Measures Act 1972 (Act 71).
Junaidah said traders were required to comply with the law regardless of whether their businesses operated in urban or rural areas.
She said the use of properly verified weighing and measuring instruments was essential to ensure accurate measurements and fair transactions between traders and consumers.
Offenders convicted under Act 71 can face a fine of up to RM40,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.
Junaidah reminded all traders in the Federal Territory of Labuan to ensure that weighing and measuring instruments used for commercial transactions had valid verification and were re-verified before their validity expired.
She said KPDN would continue inspections and monitoring throughout Labuan to ensure traders complied with the relevant laws and regulations, regardless of their business location.
