Raul Jimenez was back on the scoresheet as Wolves beat Preston North End to reach the Carabao Cup third-round.
The Mexican striker tapped in from close range with eight minutes played.
Adama Traore's thunderous left-footed volley doubled the home side's advantage on the 29th minute mark.
Hwang Hee-Chan had a great chance to make it 3-0 before the break but his poor penalty was easily saved by Preston keeper David Cornell.
Ben Woodburn pulled one back from Preston, but the Premier League side was able to hold onto victory.
Speaking after the game, Wolves manager Bruno Lage said Jimenez should have taken the penalty.
"Raul is a generous guy and also Hwang needs confidence, but this kind of thing is not for confidence and the guy who should take it is Raul," Lage said.
"He took a decision to give the penalty to Hwang, but it's not for that, it's for the man who is supposed (to take it).
"I know the goals are important for players, but more important for me is the way they perform for the team and not for themselves.
"I understand, but I don't agree and Raul should take the penalty."
