LAHAD DATU: Indonesia is looking to strengthen trade and investment cooperation with Lahad Datu as both sides explore opportunities arising from their close geographical and economic links.
The matter was discussed during a working visit by the Indonesian Consul General in Tawau, Dino Nurwahyudin, to the Lahad Datu Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
The meeting focused on promoting bilateral trade, investment and business opportunities, particularly between businesses in Lahad Datu, Sabah and Kalimantan in Indonesia.
Lahad Datu Chinese Chamber of Commerce President Tan Cheng Teng said the close proximity between Sabah and Indonesia provided a strong basis for cooperation in trade, investment, logistics, food, agriculture, palm oil and downstream industries.
He said Lahad Datu’s strategic position on Sabah’s east coast, together with its port, logistics, industrial and commodity-related potential, could support stronger trade links between Sabah and Indonesia.
“Lahad Datu has a strategic position on the east coast of Sabah, with potential in ports, logistics, industry and commodities,” Tan said, hoping that future cooperation would progress from trade activities to business matching, joint ventures and direct investment involving companies from both sides.
Dino said the Consulate General would provide assistance to facilitate cross-border trade cooperation, business visits and business matching aimed at creating mutually beneficial opportunities.
He also invited the chamber and its members to attend the Tawau Trade and Investment Conference and Indonesia Trade Expo 2026 to explore potential business and investment opportunities.
The meeting was seen as an opportunity to establish closer business links and identify practical areas of cooperation between the business communities of Lahad Datu and Indonesia.
