
LAHAD DATU: The Lahad Datu District Council (MDLD) is one of the Local Authorities (PBT) that has the potential to be upgraded to a Municipal Council.
Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who is also State Local Government and Housing Minister, said that there are still some criteria and conditions that need to be met before elevating its status.
“There are several criteria that should be met before elevating the District Council’s status to Municipal Council.
“I would say ‘yes’ on the card for Lahad Datu is one of the potential local authorities to be upgrade,” he said during the closing ceremony of 13th Sabah Local Government Sports (SKTS), last Friday.
Joachim hoped that the SKTS achieved its objective as well as providing sweet memories to the participants during their stay in Lahad Datu.
He hoped the Ministry and local authorities will continue the excellent tradition not only in sports but also in carrying out their duties.
“One of the positive aspects of this event is the presence of visitors to Lahad Datu,” he said, adding that it was an economic boon to the local community.
According to Joachim, the event was made successful due to result of cooperation from all level and it’s proves that if all members works together and united, we could carry out any tasks and will be fruitful.
He also congratulated organising committee members and contingents who were involved in the events.
The event ended with Zone Eight comprising Lahad Datu, Semporna and Kunak District Council emerged as the overall winner.
Runners-up were Zone 6 (Tambunan, Nabawan, Tenom and Keningau) while Zone 3 (Tawau) in the third place.
Also present were Permanent Secretary of state Local Government and Housing Ministry and Chairman of the 13th SKTS Main Committee, Dr. Jamili Nais.
