The first midweek round of the 2022/23 LaLiga Santander season is upon us, with Matchday 10 fixtures taking place across this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. There are some very intriguing games, including a couple of derbies and some tricky encounters for the title challengers.
The very first match is a big one as Sevilla FC host Valencia CF at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Tuesday evening. The Andalusian outfit are undefeated since Jorge Sampaoli returned as coach and they’ll look to continue that improvement against a solid Valencia CF side that just saw Edinson Cavani score his first goals for the club. This will be the 200th official meeting between these clubs and it has been a fairly even series over the years, with Valencia CF having won 89 so far, Sevilla FC winning 75 and 35 draws.
There are then two more games on Tuesday night and both of them in Madrid. Getafe CF will be taking on Athletic Club in what should be a high intensity duel, with both teams welcoming players back from injury. Then, Atlético de Madrid will meet Rayo Vallecano at the Estadio Cívitas Metropolitano for a capital city derby. Radamel Falcao will hope to score against his former club, but will have to break through the impressive wall of Reinildo, José María Giménez and Stefan Savić to do so.
Wednesday is the day with most fixtures this week as there are four games taking place, starting with two 7pm CEST kick-offs as Cádiz CF meet Real Betis for an Andalusian derby before Real Valladolid and RC Celta square off in a battle of two sides struggling to turn their good performances into wins.
Real Sociedad, on the other hand, know exactly what it’s like to win as the Basque side have now strung together seven victories in a row in all competitions, something the team hadn’t achieved since 1967. That is a very impressive achievement considering the various injuries La Real have had to overcome and they’ll aim to continue the good run when hosting RCD Mallorca at the Reale Arena.
Real Madrid then play in the 9pm CEST time slot on Wednesday night, fresh from their victory in Sunday’s ElClasico. They are now the league leaders and will aim to stay top of the table by taking three points from their visit to Elche CF. But Los Franjiverdes will feel confident after drawing their first match since Jorge Almirón returned to the dugout; Almirón has fond memories of his only previous meeting with Los Blancos, earning a 1-1 draw against the odds.
UD Almería vs Girona FC is the first of the Thursday fixtures, as the two newly promoted sides go head-to-head in a game that should produce a lot of goals, as these are two sides that are scoring a lot and conceding a lot right now. RCD Espanyol are also scoring and conceding in equal measure this season, with the Catalan side’s games producing 3.11 total goals on average this campaign, and they’ll be on the road at CA Osasuna on Thursday night with Joselu hoping to find the back of the net for a fourth matchday in a row.
Matchday 10 then concludes at the Camp Nou at 9pm CEST on Thursday, with FC Barcelona vs Villarreal CF. Xavi’s team just suffered their first domestic defeat of the season in ElClasico and will look to bounce back in front of their home fans. However, the Blaugrana will remember that Villarreal CF won 2-0 at the Camp Nou in the final matchday of last season. It should be a thrilling way to end this midweek matchday.
