THE government’s decision to expand social security coverage to include non-employment injuries has been welcomed as a transformative and long-overdue measure that will benefit all Malaysians, according to social protection advocate Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
“Accidents and injuries can happen at any time and in any place, not just at the workplace,” he said in a statement, adding that round-the-clock protection was essential in the modern working environment.
“In today’s fast-paced world, workers face risks both on the job and in their daily lives. Road accidents, slips, falls and other unforeseen incidents can cause serious harm and leave families vulnerable if there is no adequate protection in place.”
Lee was responding to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent announcement that the government will be introducing a Non-Employment Injury Scheme to account for the growing number of Malaysians in flexible and remote work arrangements.
The scheme forms part of broader efforts to reform the labour legal framework to ensure worker protection is not limited by time or location.
“This is crucial as workers are the backbone of our economy, and their safety and well-being must always be a national priority,” Lee said.
He stressed that the introduction of such coverage would mark a meaningful step towards a more comprehensive and compassionate social security system, one that strengthens the safety net for workers and helps reduce financial distress for affected families.
Lee also urged all parties — the government, employers, and employees — to work collectively to support and implement the initiative.
