Voter turnout in the Lamag state by-election reached 10.57% by 9 am, with polling centres open until 5.30 pm across nine locations.
KINABATANGAN: Voter turnout for the Lamag state by-election stood at 10.57% as of 9 am this morning.
The Election Commission (EC) reported that 1,429 voters from the 13,515 registered had cast their ballots.
The Lamag polling district led the turnout with 21.79%, followed by Balat at 21.07%.
Other areas recorded turnouts of 11.93% in Buang Sayang, 10.70% in Bukit Garam, 9.57% in Kota Kinabatangan and 7.23% in Usaha Jaya.
All nine polling centres with 30 streams opened at 7.30 am for voters to elect a new representative.
Polling will continue until 5.30 pm, with centres closing in stages from 1 pm onwards.
Voting has proceeded smoothly under favourable weather conditions so far.
The EC is targeting a final voter turnout exceeding 65% for this by-election.
Vote tallying will be conducted at Dewan Sri Lamag, with official results expected by 10 pm.
The Lamag by-election is a straight fight between Barisan Nasional’s Mohd Ismail Ayob and Warisan’s Mazliwati Abdul Malek.
It is being held concurrently with the Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election, which features a three-cornered contest.
Candidates for the parliamentary seat are BN’s Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar, Warisan’s Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman and Independent Goldam Hamid.
Both by-elections were triggered by the death of incumbent Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin on December 5 last year.
