Former Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert felt a lack of support in the transfer market cost Brendan Rodgers his job at Leicester City.

Rodgers was sacked on Saturday after defeat at Crystal Palace.

Lambert told BBC Sport: "What Brendan's gone through with no money getting helped in his direction this season, I had that for virtually three years at Aston Villa.

I tried to get Romelu Lukaku, Kevin de Bruyne was a young player at Chelsea at the time, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang I knew from Saint-Etienne, I knew that he was available. When I asked the owner of the club can we get these players in, the answer that kept coming back was 'no'.

You have to spend to stand still in the Premier League if you don't spend, there's only one place you can go. Forget how good your training ground is and forget how good the cafeteria is, it's what happens on the pitch and you need results."
