KUALA LUMPUR — Barisan Nasional (BN) has won the Mahkota by-election, securing the state seat in Johor for the fifth time and by a much larger margin than before.

In official results from BN’s own count of votes at 7.45pm, its candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah polled 27,133 votes against Perikatan Nasional’s Mohamad Haizan Jaafar, who won 7,130.

This gives Syed Hussien a majority of 19,963 votes over his only rival.

In the last state election in 2022, BN’s Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain won by a majority of 5,166 votes in a four-cornered fight involving Pakatan Harapan (PH), PN and Warisan candidates.

The by-election was called following her death at the age of 63 on August 2.

There are a total of 66,318 registered voters in Mahkota constituency according to the Election Commission’s roll for this by-election.

The Mahkota state seat was first contested in 2004 and has gone through five general elections with BN winning four of them.  — September 28, 2024
