Following the dazzling success of the 15th Latin American Festival at bbpark, Bukit Bintang, the warmth and vibrancy of Latin America have left a lasting mark—this time, in the form of over RM50,000 raised for two Malaysian charities. In a heartwarming cheque presentation ceremony held on Tuesday, 10 December 2024, the festival organizers announced that a total of RM50,154.21 will be donated to two deserving causes: RM10,000 to the IDEAS Autism Centre for equipment supporting therapy projects, and RM40,154.21 to Yayasan Orang Buta Malaysia (Malaysia Foundation for the Blind) to fund their Braille machine project.
The festival, held on 6 October 2024, was a feast for the senses—a lively celebration of culture, music, dance, and the irresistible flavors of Latin America. Organized by the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Embassies in Malaysia (GRULAC) in collaboration with Plaza Low Yat, Federal Hotels International, and the Latin Women’s Association of Malaysia, the event once again demonstrated the power of community, diversity, and charitable giving.
“We are honoured to host the 15th edition of the Latin American Festival, a tradition we have proudly supported since 2011," said Douglas Crichton, Area Director of Plaza Low Yat. "Just like in previous years, attendees enjoyed a day packed with engaging activities and the authentic flavours of eight Latin American countries. This festival continues to strengthen the bonds between Latin American nations and Malaysia, offering Malaysians a unique opportunity to embrace diverse cultures."
The buzz of bbpark that Sunday was electric—filled with the beats of salsa, the swirling skirts of samba dancers, and the tantalizing aromas of empanadas and arepas sizzling on hot grills. While the festival offered a lively cultural exchange, its true essence lay in its mission to give back to the community. Through ticket sales, vendor contributions, and generous donations, the event successfully raised funds for two local projects—each focusing on enhancing the lives of Malaysians in need.
IDEAS Autism Centre, which received RM10,000, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with autism through therapy and support services. This donation will help the center acquire much-needed equipment, expanding their capacity to offer specialized care.
Meanwhile, Yayasan Orang Buta Malaysia (Malaysia Foundation for the Blind) was awarded RM40,154.21, which will go towards acquiring Braille machines—critical tools that provide blind individuals the means to access written communication and educational opportunities.

Ms. Ooi Lee Ping, Director of Group Marketing, Sales & Business Development and Operations of Federal Hotels International, spoke passionately about the significance of the festival’s charitable impact: “This one-day event celebrates the diversity of Latin American culture, food, and rhythms, but it also spreads joy by giving back. We're thrilled to support IDEAS Autism Centre and the Malaysia Foundation for the Blind through this annual charity event. It’s part of our ongoing community commitment, and we're proud to partner with GRULAC and the Latin Women’s Association to make a difference.”
Looking back, the Latin American Festival has grown into an iconic event in Kuala Lumpur, offering Malaysians a yearly chance to immerse themselves in the lively spirit of Latin America. The festival's origins date back to 2011, when Plaza Low Yat and bbpark first collaborated with GRULAC for the 3rd Latin American Fest, marking the beginning of an annual celebration of life, art, food, music, and cultural exchange.
“Our festival at bbpark has hosted the vibrant colours and pulsating vibes of Latin America for 13 years now,” said Ms. Ooi, reflecting on the event’s legacy. “It is a living testament to the enduring friendship between Malaysia and Latin America—a space where people from all walks of life can come together to celebrate their shared humanity and diverse cultural heritage.”
Of course, the festival wouldn’t have been possible without the invaluable support of partners and sponsors. “We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the City Hall of Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) for granting road closures and to our sponsors—Bluestar AMG, Ethiopian Airlines, and Turkish Airlines—for helping to make this event a reality,” added Ms. Ooi. The Malaysian Red Crescent also played a key role in ensuring the safety and smooth running of the festival.
As the evening came to a close, it was clear that the Latin American Festival had once again succeeded in not only bridging cultural divides but also making a real, tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most. While the colourful sights and sounds of Latin America may have been the highlight of the day, the spirit of giving was its true heartbeat.
