A group of teenagers riding modified bicycles, commonly known as "basikal lajak," in Kuala Lumpur found themselves in trouble during a New Year’s Eve traffic operation. Instead of issuing summonses, traffic police and Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers opted for an unconventional punishment, instructing the teens to perform squats, or "ketuk-ketampi."

A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on Instagram, shows around 20 youths, believed to be underage, obediently performing the squats under the supervision of a traffic policeman. Rows of modified bicycles can be seen parked behind them, indicating the reason for their detention.

The incident unfolded during a large-scale, integrated traffic operation conducted by the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Police Department and JPJ. The operation, aimed at maintaining order during New Year’s Eve celebrations, sought to curb illegal racing, road thuggery, and other traffic violations that often accompany large public gatherings.

Eyewitnesses at the scene were quick to capture the unusual sight on their devices, turning it into a memorable moment for both the teenagers and the onlookers. While the punishment may have been lighthearted, it served as a reminder of the authorities’ commitment to ensuring road safety and discouraging dangerous behavior.

"Basikal lajak," a growing trend among some youths, involves modifying bicycles to achieve higher speeds, often at the expense of safety. The activity has drawn criticism for posing risks not only to the riders but also to other road users.

By opting for this unconventional approach, the authorities aimed to educate rather than penalize the teens, reinforcing the importance of adhering to traffic laws. The light punishment also reflected a focus on deterrence without imposing harsh consequences on the young offenders.

The New Year’s Eve traffic operation extended into the early hours of the morning, ensuring smooth traffic flow and minimizing disturbances. Authorities hope such measures will reduce road-related incidents and promote safer behavior among all road users.
