A grand thanksgiving feast held by Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, senior political secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has stirred controversy, with critics questioning the extravagance of the event amid broader concerns over governance and political priorities.

The dinner, hosted at a hotel in Melaka, was organised to mark Shamsul Iskandar’s victory in the recent PKR division elections, where he secured the Hang Tuah Jaya division chief post with a commanding lead. His win, with nearly 2,000 votes compared to his opponent’s 736, reaffirmed his influence within the party. However, the celebratory gathering has drawn more attention than the victory itself.

What raised eyebrows was not only the scale of the celebration, but also its timing. Critics, particularly from opposition quarters, questioned the source of the funds for such a grand affair—especially when the event was for a divisional leadership post rather than a national-level achievement. Detractors expressed unease that such opulence could send the wrong message in an era where transparency and accountability are frequently preached by the same political coalition.

The presence of high-ranking PKR leaders, including Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, added to the spectacle, leading some observers to speculate that the event may have had broader political significance. The gathering, while intended as a show of unity and celebration, has instead fueled debates about the image PKR presents to the public.

The backlash was not limited to opposition voices. Some within the government’s support base appeared uncomfortable with the optics of such a costly celebration, especially when many citizens continue to face economic hardship. Questions have emerged over whether the party, now in power, is beginning to mirror the same behaviors it once criticized in others.

Political observers note that the speed at which parties in government face scrutiny often correlates with the promises they made while in opposition. PKR, long associated with reformist ideals and anti-corruption stances, is now under pressure to prove that it still upholds those values. Displays of excess—no matter how minor in intention—risk damaging its credibility.

This episode serves as a reminder that public perception can quickly shift when political conduct appears inconsistent with proclaimed principles. As PKR continues to navigate its role within the ruling coalition, moments like these will test whether it can maintain the integrity that once defined its reform movement.
