The government is prepared to review or amend existing laws to better tackle provocations involving race, religion and royalty, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said.

PUTRAJAYA: The government may review, amend or introduce new laws to address provocations involving sensitive 3R issues — race, religion and royalty — if gaps are found in existing legislation, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said today.

Fahmi said the matter was discussed during the Cabinet meeting, where ministers agreed that firm action must be taken against individuals who deliberately inflame such issues, particularly on social media and in the public sphere.

He said enforcement agencies, including the Attorney General’s Chambers of Malaysia, had been urged to act decisively against those responsible.

The government is prepared to review existing laws and strengthen them if necessary to ensure that enforcement authorities can take appropriate action against offenders, including detention or remand.

Further details, particularly on possible legal action, are expected to be announced by the Attorney General soon, Fahmi added.
