- Home secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to announce proposals on Monday to amend a 1971 law, aiming to allow the deportation of Rochdale grooming gang leader Shabir Ahmed.
- Ahmed was released earlier this month after serving 14 years of a 19-year sentence for rape and sexual offences against girls, some as young as 12.
- The current 1971 legislation prevents the removal of a small group of Commonwealth citizens who arrived in the UK over five decades ago, despite Ahmed being stripped of his British citizenship.
- Pakistan is reportedly unlikely to accept Ahmed's return, with suggestions they are demanding the extradition of two political dissidents from the UK in exchange.
- Shadow home secretary Chris Philp suggested that if Pakistan refuses to take Ahmed back, the UK could consider restricting or stopping visa issuance to people from Pakistan.
