Shattering gender stereotypes in the over 175-year-old history of Lawrence School, Sanawar, Ruchi Pradhan Datta joined as its first woman headmistress on May 1.

Datta brings more than 25 years of extensive experience in education, having held leadership positions at some of India’s most reputed institutions. An alumna of La Martiniere Girls’ College and Isabella Thoburn College, she has served at The Bishop’s School, Pune; Rashtriya Indian Military College; The Lawrence School, Lovedale; Rajmata Krishna Kumari Girls Public School; and The Asian School, Dehradun.

She is widely respected for her strong academic leadership, administrative expertise and deep commitment to student wellbeing and holistic development. Her leadership style emphasises clarity of thought, effective communication and the promotion of critical thinking and self-expression among students.

Commenting on the appointment, Brig Adarsh Butail (Retd), President of the Old Sanawarian Society and Member (ex-officio), Board of Governors, said: “As the daughter, wife, and mother of army officers, Datta embodies the values of discipline, adaptability, resilience, and service that are deeply ingrained in Sanawar’s military heritage and founding principles. The school community and the Old Sanawarian Society look

forward to supporting her as she leads Sanawar into its next chapter. We warmly welcome Datta and extend our full support as she assumes this pivotal role.”

Datta’s academic credentials span English, education, science and journalism. She also holds a distinction in Kathak, an honours diploma in systems management, and a gold medal in journalism. Her diverse background as an educator, journalist and personality development trainer enriches her perspective on modern education.

Sharing her vision on assuming office, Datta said: “It is an honour to join The Lawrence School, Sanawar. My foremost priority will be to further strengthen academic standards by aligning our pedagogy with the best practices globally. At the same time, we will continue to nurture well-rounded individuals through a balanced emphasis on character, creativity and critical thinking.”

Under her leadership, the school aims to preserve its rich traditions while embracing progressive, globally benchmarked educational practices. Her vision places strong emphasis on academic excellence, student wellbeing, inquiry-driven learning, and values-based character development.

The legacy school, established by Sir Henry Lawrence and his wife Honoria on April 15, 1847, is believed to be one of the oldest co-educational boarding schools in the world. It was initially founded as a charitable asylum for orphans of British soldiers.
