Kota Kinabalu: Laws to protect working women in Sabah are still woefully inadequate and urgently need reform, according to the Society of Equality, Respect and Trust for All Sabah (Serata).

Its President, Sabrina Melisa Aripen, highlighted women are short-changed of their employment rights by the Sabah Labour Ordinance 1950 (SLO) unlike working women in Peninsular Malaysia who are covered by the Employment Act 1955(EA). “They are not protected from being dismissed while pregnant, and they are only eligible for confinement after 28 weeks of pregnancy, in contrast to the Employment Act which provides better coverage at 22 weeks,” she said.
