A PRACTISING lawyer was brought before the Magistrates’ Court here on Thursday to face three charges related to the abetment of drug trafficking and possession involving controlled substances.
The accused, Che Muhammad Amir Syafiq Che Musa, aged 33, is alleged to have committed the offences on 23 December last year between 9 a.m. and noon at the lock-up of the Kuala Terengganu High Court.
He is accused of acting in concert with another individual, Muhammad Syafiq Syahmi Mohamad Zafri, 26, to traffic 123 grams of methamphetamine.
The charge was framed under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which upon conviction carries either the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with whipping.
In addition to the trafficking charge, Che Muhammad Amir Syafiq also faces two further counts of abetting possession of drugs at the same location and time.
These involve 21 grams of cannabis and 13 grams of nimetazepam.
If convicted of the cannabis-related offence, the accused faces imprisonment of between two and five years, as well as whipping.
The charge involving nimetazepam carries a penalty of a fine of up to RM100,000, or imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, or both.
No plea was recorded after the charges were read out in court.
Magistrate Athirah Hashim fixed 29 April for the next mention of the case, pending the outcome of chemical analysis reports.
The prosecution is being led by Deputy Public Prosecutors Amer Abu Bakar Abdullah and Noradila Ab Latif, while the accused is represented by counsel Mohd Syaza Firdaus Rashid.
Earlier, Terengganu Police Chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin disclosed that the alleged smuggling of dozens of drug pellets into Marang Prison was uncovered during a security inspection, which detected prohibited substances concealed within an inmate’s body. The drugs were believed to have been introduced with the assistance of a lawyer.
The total value of the drugs seized was estimated at RM16,000. - January 8, 2025
