FORMER Tabung Haji chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim did not choose to appear in court wearing a purple police lock-up uniform and handcuffs, his lawyer said today.
Lawyer Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad said the 60-year-old former Baling MP had not been given an opportunity to change his clothes before being brought to the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex to face a charge of using his position to obtain gratification under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.
“Our side was surprised by the statement attributed to the MACC that our client chose and insisted on wearing the lock-up uniform and handcuffs.
“Therefore, our client's appearance in the purple lock-up uniform and handcuffs during the MACC charge proceedings was due to the circumstances and the same clothing he was wearing when he was previously brought before the court for the police remand proceedings,” he said in a statement.
Amer said any suggestion that Abdul Azeez had deliberately chosen to appear in such attire was inaccurate and gave a misleading impression.
“We hope the above clarifies the circumstances involving our client in court today and corrects any misunderstanding arising from the report in question.
“Our client reserves the right to take appropriate legal action against anyone who creates, publishes, disseminates or maintains any false or misleading narrative regarding the circumstances of this incident,” he said.
Earlier, the MACC said Abdul Azeez had chosen and insisted on wearing a Royal Malaysia Police lock-up uniform when appearing at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.
The anti-graft agency said its officers and the police personnel escorting Abdul Azeez had advised him to change into normal clothes before attending court.
However, according to the MACC, the politician insisted on remaining in the lock-up uniform and handcuffs.
Abdul Azeez is facing a charge of using his position to obtain gratification under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009. - September 10, 2026
