Lawyer urges action over fresh bullying case at Zara's school

Kota Kinabalu: Senior counsel Datuk Ram Singh (pic) has urged the Sabah Education Department (JPNS) to take appropriate action against the administration of the school attended by the late Zara Qairina Mahathir following a recent bullying case at the school.

Ram said he was concerned after learning of another alleged bullying incident involving three male students at the same school.

He said the child's father lodged a complaint, the matter was investigated, and the three students were charged before the Children's Court in Papar.

According to Ram, the incident allegedly occurred on May 13, and the court recently ordered the child offenders to complete 120 hours of community service at the same school.

He questioned how such an incident could have occurred while the inquest into Zara's death is still ongoing, adding that teachers, wardens, the principal and other school officers had been questioned previously on school management and discipline.

Ram said the safety and welfare of students remain the paramount responsibility of the school management and called on parents, teachers and the public to play a greater role in protecting children and ensuring students are not silenced when reporting incidents.

He added that he would lodge a police report over the matter and thanked the police for their prompt response to an earlier report he had lodged.
