LDP backs DBKK action against illegal squatter settlements

Kota Kinabalu: LDP Information Chief Nicholas Ban (pic) has expressed support for City Hall's (DBKK) enforcement operations against illegal squatter settlements in Likas and other parts of the city, saying the issue involves public safety, environmental protection, urban planning and the management of public resources.

He said many illegal settlements are linked to unauthorised water and electricity connections, which place additional pressure on public infrastructure and affect law-abiding consumers through supply disruptions and increased costs.

Nicholas said illegal utility connections contribute to water shortages, low pressure, power outages and damage to distribution networks, with the impact extending to nearby homes, businesses, hotels and other users.

He cited the redevelopment of Sembulan as an example of how proper planning and cooperation between the government and private sector can transform neglected areas into thriving residential and commercial communities.

While welcoming DBKK’s demolition of 13 illegal squatter houses behind Alam Mesra, Likas, he said enforcement must remain consistent to prevent reoccupation of government land and support Kota Kinabalu’s development as a cleaner, safer and better-planned city.
